RECLAIMING THE MANLY MAN - LAUNCHED SEPTEMBER 2022

On World Suicide Prevention Day 2022 the theme is Creating Hope Through Action.

Although it’s important to have national & international days highlighting different issues, we at MWT passionately believe in highlighting the work and issues every day of the year, not just when marketing calendars tell us to.

This year, to mark our first World Suicide Prevention Day, we are launching our first campaign, Reclaim the Manly Man. This campaign will run for as long as we can keep it going, not just for 1 day.

The concept of masculinity, and what makes a man “manly” are often hotly debated topics, with terms such as “toxic masculinity” often used as a descriptor and an insult. We want to be clear: masculinity is not inherently toxic. However, for many men, the use of the term masculinity to mean only a few, unrepresentative characteristics can create toxic thoughts and environments.

Throughout this campaign, we want to encourage men from ALL backgrounds to challenge what they think being a “manly man” is through the power of conversation. It’s time to put stereotypes to bed, throw away generalisations and create a world where being “manly” doesn’t mean just having muscles, or never crying, but incorporates all the many different ways men express themselves.

Throughout the coming months we will be posting regularly on the topic of “manly men” and trying to kick start conversations around the theme.

We want to create safe, inclusive conversations, so please remember it’s ok to be curious, to ask questions and to have differences of opinion. It’s not ok to be rude or aggressive.

If you want to join in with the campaign and share what being a “man” or a “manly man” means to you, why not use the hashtag #ManlyMenLookLikeThis
